The immune system is a powerful tool that protects the body against infections.

However, the immune system can sometimes go into overdrive, and attack the very body it was designed to protect. These “autoimmune” disorders can involve all the cell types in the body, including the different blood cells. The most prominent of the hematological autoimmune disorders are immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), in which the immune system respectively attacks platelets and red blood cells. A much rarer autoimmune disorder involving blood cells consists of Evans syndrome in which the immune system attacks and destroys all types of blood cells.
